This Sunday (14th February) we begin a new series “Lent in the Upper Room.” Later on this week I will blog about lent and why we need to reclaim lent in the Baptist tradition. Before I do that I wanted to give some extra information on this sermon series, which will take us up to Easter Sunday (and a little bit beyond!).
Jesus ends His public ministry in John 12. That is His last public pronouncement before He dies. In John 13-16, Jesus prepares His disciples to live in His bodily absence. Jesus is really present with us, through the Holy Spirit, but he is physically, bodily, absent. Jesus prepares His disciples and He prepares us for the events of His death, resurrection and ascension, in the upper room in Jerusalem.
I wanted to draw your attention to a few books and commentaries on John. I know many of you like to read some additional material and I know many of you have purchased the books recommended in the encounter groups. In the encounter groups each week we will study what Leon Morris has to say about each text. However, for those of you who wish to read more deeply you might be interested in these texts:
Lesslie Newbigin “The Light has Come”

D.A. Carson "The Gospel according to John"

William Barclay "The Gospel of John"

I have drawn on these books for my own study in this series. If you are only going to buy one of them, buy Newbigin! It is a new and refreshing look at the gospel of John as the message for the world today.
To buy any of the books click on the clicks below each book which will take you to the relevant websites.
Blessings as you study the Word.
