Don’t be scared! Numbers is maybe not everyone’s favourite go-to book of the Bible, but that’s why this is a great opportunity to dig in together!
We’ve again asked RJ for some recommended resources as we take a deep dive into the Old Testament, starting this new series on Sunday, July 26, 2026.
As usual, a great place to start is with the animated summary from Bible Project. This gives you the big picture themes in under 7 minutes. It starts, “This fourth book of the Bible carries forward the story of Israel after their Exodus from slavery…”
Next, we have another free online resource, this time a commentary on Numbers by Adrian R. Reynolds, presented by The Gospel Coalition.
The commentary starts out, “Numbers is the fourth book of the Pentateuch, the name sometimes given to the first five books of the Old Testament. The book is a complex balance of almost equal parts narrative (story) and law with a small number of poetry and prophecy sections. The combination of these different genres is unique, especially in the ebb and flow between them.”
And finally, if you want to read what RJ is reading, we have a commentary on Numbers with some familiar names! Our old friend, Steve West, along with Joel Barker, (who is both a colleague of Steve’s at Heritage College & Seminary and son of our friend, David Barker), together wrote this book as part of the Kerux Commentary series.
The authors “illuminate the enduring importance of this notoriously difficult text… God's commitment to both his people and his promises claims center stage…Numbers emphasizes God's overwhelming holiness and the proper human responses of worship and trust.”
The book covers Numbers’ “themes of worship; disobedience and grumbling; judgment and restoration; anticipating of promises; and even leadership, all of which relate to God's people today.”
